Gearphoria Volume 7, Number 1

Walrus, Ryan Adams in pedal collab New DEFCON 4 is equal parts EQ, preamp and boost 8 GEARPHORIA SEP/OCT 2018 OKLAHOMA City-based Walrus Audio and singer/songwriter Ryan Adams have collaborated on a new pedal — the DEFCON 4 preamp and EQ. What started as a phone conversation in November 2017 has become the latest offering in the Walrus slate. Bring peace time to your tone and avoid amp tweaking during a set by using the DEFCON 4 to easily switch from single coil to hum- bucking instruments with a quick twist of the rotary knobs. When the Launch switch is engaged, go into DEFCON 1 and activate a searing boost for your guitar. Use the Low (IV), Mid (III) and High Band (II) rotary knobs to cut and boost fre- quencies of your signal. The toggle switches will activate or bypass each frequency. When activated, the corresponding illuminated numbers will turn on. Flip the launch switch to go to DEFCON 1 and activate a 10db MOSFET boost. “I want this to look like some- one from the 80s was pushing the technology they had available at the time,” said Adams. The DEFCON 4 comes packaged in a collectable blister pack — similar to what your favorite 1980s action figures would have come in. The pedal comes in black textured enclosure with artwork inspired by the 1983 movie War Games and Ryan’s love for all things 80’s nostalgia. The die-cast enclosure’s exact size is 3.68” x 4.67” x 1.547”. Power requirements are 9VDC, cen- ter negative (100mA minimum). The DEFCON 4 retails for $299 and is available for pre-order now with an expected release date of September 10. G
