Gearphoria Volume 7, Number 1

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR THERE IS something magical about autumn. Spring gets a lot of credit for being a time for renewal, but fall has a not-so-secret beauty about it that can be seen in the trees and felt on the wind. It is a time of change. Change is a com- mon thread that runs throughout this issue of Gearphoria (our sixth birthday edition), from retirements to start-ups, from new sonic explorations to man- aging new growth. Change is the one constant... as silly as that might sound. This time out we bring you an exclu- sive shop tour and chat with Nick Greer. Greer Amps has been going now for 20 years. A simple project that started on his dad’s pool table is now a growing business facing both the staffing and logistical challenges that come with success. Today, the Athens, GA-based workshop employs as many people as it ever has, and the plans are to keep the pedal to the metal. On the artist front we have a pair of unique players in the spotlight. Trevor Larkin is a guitarist from Washington state. After schooling at Berklee and a few gigs here and there, he landed the spot as lead guitarist with rock-and-soul purveyor Allen Stone. With a new re- cord en route, our intrepid Q&A queen Alison Richter spoke with Larkin about life, licks and all things in between. Robert Walter is an accomplished keyboard player and has been the leader of Robert Walter’s 20th Congress for almost 20 years. He is also a founding member of the Greyboy Allstars. The Congress has a new record out in late September -- a departure piece entitled Spacesuit . We spoke with Walter about the retro sci-fi sounds on the new al- bum, and what it took to get them. We also have a pair of show wrap- ups. We enlisted The Tone Mob’s Blake Wyland to venture into Brooklyn and check out the Fear The Riff II Expo, while I took in the vintage goodness of the Four Amigos Orange County guitar show in Costa Mesa, CA. Like pedals? We review a handful of new stomps from the likes of Walrus Audio, EarthQuaker Devices, Benson Amps and more. We also give our take on new music from Alice In Chains, The Magpie Salute, Josh Smith and a Re- Lic’D featuring The Grays. All of this, plus our regular news, recurring columns, and a List -eria you won’t want to miss. Ready? Set? Read! Publisher/Editor-in-Chief, Gearphoria GEARPHORIA SEP/OCT 2018 5
